Officially, there are none. No government or major rating body awards more than five stars. “7-star” is an informal label for a small group of ultra-luxury hotels, and most lists name between 5 and 10 of them, led by the Burj Al Arab in Dubai.
That one paragraph is the short version. The longer version is more interesting, because the label has a real origin, a few of the “7-star” hotels on popular lists don’t hold up under scrutiny, and the price difference between them is huge.
This guide separates fact from marketing, shows what each hotel actually offers, and helps you decide whether a “7-star” stay is worth the money for your trip.
- Official 7-star hotels: zero. Rating systems stop at five stars.
- Hotels commonly called 7-star: five to ten, depending on the list.
- The most famous: the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, officially a five-star hotel.
- In India: none officially. The top grade is 5-star Deluxe.
What Is a 7-Star Hotel?
A 7-star hotel is an unofficial title given to hotels that go far beyond normal five-star service. It is not a certification. Nobody inspects a property and hands out a seventh star.
The term is usually linked to the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, which opened in December 1999. The story most often repeated is that a visiting journalist felt five stars were too little for what she saw and called it “seven-star”. The hotel itself has publicly distanced itself from the claim, and it remains officially a five-star property. The nickname stuck anyway because it was catchy and the hotel looked like nothing else on earth.
In practice, when people say “7-star”, they mean a hotel that usually combines most of these:
- A dedicated butler for every suite
- Private transfers (a luxury car, a yacht or a helicopter)
- Landmark architecture or an extremely rare location
- A very high staff-to-guest ratio
- Suites that are larger than many Indian apartments
- Privacy at a level most five-star hotels cannot offer
Why 7 Stars Don’t Officially Exist
There is no single global hotel rating system. Each country or region runs its own, and almost all of them stop at five.
- India: The Ministry of Tourism’s classification scheme tops out at 5-star Deluxe.
- Europe: Hotelstars Union members use 1 to 5 stars, with a “Superior” tag for the top end.
- UAE: Dubai’s tourism authority classifies hotels up to five stars.
- Independent guides: Forbes Travel Guide and the Michelin Guide’s Keys use their own scales, not a seven-point one.
So when a hotel calls itself “7-star”, it is a branding choice, not a grade. Some hotels have leaned into the label in their marketing. Others, like the Burj Al Arab, simply benefited from it.
How Many 7-Star Hotels Are There? (The Realistic Count)
Because the label is informal, the number depends on who is counting. A more useful way to look at it is in three groups:
| Group | What It Means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Widely associated with the label | Mentioned by major media and travellers for years | Burj Al Arab, Emirates Palace |
| Self-promoted or regionally branded | The hotel or its name uses “7-star” in marketing | Pangu 7 Star Hotel (Beijing), Galleria Vik Milano (Milan) |
| Ultra-luxury, but not formally 7-star | Included on lists for experience and exclusivity | Laucala Island (Fiji), Signiel Seoul |
If you want a number for a quiz or a quick answer, five to ten is the safe range. If someone gives you an exact figure like “exactly 7” with confidence, treat it with caution.
The Hotels Most Often Called 7-Star
Here are the properties that appear most often on “7-star” lists, with a note on how solid each claim really is.
1. Burj Al Arab, Dubai, UAE
The original. It stands on an artificial island about 280 metres off Jumeirah Beach, rises roughly 321 metres, and is shaped like a billowing sail. Every one of its 202 rooms is a duplex suite.
What stands out:
- Rolls-Royce airport transfers for guests
- A helipad that famously hosted a tennis match in 2005
- Al Mahara, a restaurant reached by a simulated submarine ride and set around a huge aquarium
- Butler service throughout
Reality check: It is a five-star hotel by official classification. Its “7-star” fame comes from reputation. It is also the clearest answer to the question “what is the most famous 7-star hotel in the world?”
If you want to see it for yourself, our Dubai tour packages are a good place to start planning.
2. Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi, UAE
A vast palace-style hotel that opened in 2005 and is now run under the Mandarin Oriental banner. It is known for its sheer scale, grand domes, marble, private beach and a gold-themed identity, including a gold vending machine in the lobby.
Reality check: It is a luxury five-star. The 7-star tag comes from media and traveller buzz rather than the hotel’s own rating.
Abu Dhabi is easy to combine with Dubai on a single trip, as in our Dubai with Abu Dhabi tour package.
3. Laucala Island, Fiji
A private island resort owned by the late Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz. It has a small number of villas spread across a very large island, with its own farm, golf course and water sports.
Reality check: It is not a rated hotel in the usual sense, and it is rarely sold as “7-star”. It is on the list because of privacy and exclusivity, and it is among the most expensive stays here.
If private-island seclusion is what appeals, compare it with our Maldives tour packages, which are a much shorter trip from India.
4. Pangu 7 Star Hotel, Beijing, China
Part of the Pangu Plaza complex near the Olympic Park, which was designed to resemble a dragon. It opened around the time of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Reality check: The “7 Star” is in the hotel’s own name, which makes it a branding claim, not an independent rating.
5. Galleria Vik Milano, Milan, Italy
A boutique hotel inside the historic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the most photographed shopping arcades in Europe. Under earlier names, the property promoted itself using a “seven star” label.
Reality check: The location is exceptional. The “7-star” title is a historic marketing phrase, not a recognised grade.
6. Signiel Seoul, South Korea
Located on the upper floors (roughly 76 to 101) of the Lotte World Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world. The appeal here is height, city views and refined service.
Reality check: It is a top-tier luxury hotel. Calling it “7-star” is common in travel blogs, but it is not an official designation.
7. Full Moon Hotel, Baku, Azerbaijan
You will see striking images of a glowing, moon-shaped hotel on many lists.
Reality check: We could not confirm an operating hotel under this name. It appears to be a design concept that spread online. Do not plan a trip around it, and verify any hotel independently before you book.
Other Names That Sometimes Appear
Mardan Palace in Antalya, Turkey, is another resort that often gets the “7-star” label online. As with the others, it is a popular description, not an official rating.
5-Star vs 7-Star Hotel: The Real Difference
Because 7-star isn’t a formal grade, the difference is about experience, not paperwork.
| Feature | 5-Star Hotel | So-Called 7-Star Hotel |
|---|---|---|
| Official rating | Recognised by national systems | None (informal label) |
| Service | Professional, polished | Personalised, often one butler per suite |
| Airport transfer | Taxi or hotel car | Luxury car, yacht or helicopter |
| Room type | Large rooms or suites | Large suites, often multi-level or villas |
| Privacy | Good | Exceptional (private floors, islands, entrances) |
| Dining | Several restaurants | Signature, often award-level, restaurants |
| Price per night (approx.) | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 | ₹80,000 to several lakh |
| Best for | Most travellers | Honeymoons, milestone trips, once-in-a-lifetime stays |
How Much Does a 7-Star Hotel Cost?
Prices change heavily with season, suite category and events. Treat the ranges below as planning estimates only, and always check live rates before deciding.
| Hotel | Indicative Nightly Cost (Entry-Level) |
|---|---|
| Burj Al Arab, Dubai | Roughly ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh and above in peak season |
| Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi | Roughly ₹35,000 to ₹80,000 |
| Signiel Seoul | Roughly ₹35,000 to ₹70,000 |
| Galleria Vik Milano | Roughly ₹45,000 to ₹1 lakh |
| Laucala Island, Fiji | Several lakh per villa per night (often inclusive of meals and activities) |
- Dining and spa add-ons can add 10 to 30 percent to your bill.
- Peak dates (New Year, Dubai Shopping Festival period, local holidays) can double the rate.
- Cancellation terms are often stricter at the top end. Read them before paying.
- Day-visit access is limited. At the Burj Al Arab, for example, non-guests generally can only enter with a restaurant or bar reservation.
Are There Any 7-Star Hotels in India?
No. India does not officially recognise anything above 5-star Deluxe, so there are zero official 7-star hotels in India.
India does, however, have palace and heritage hotels that rival the world’s best on service and setting. These are the ones most often compared with “7-star” experiences:
- Taj Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad: A former Nizam’s palace, restored as a hotel with grand interiors and antique collections.
- Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur: Part royal residence, part hotel, with Art Deco architecture.
- Rambagh Palace, Jaipur: The former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur.
- Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur: A white-marble palace seemingly floating on Lake Pichola.
- The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur: Known for courtyards, domes and lake views.
If you want that palace feeling without leaving India, these are an excellent place to start, and they often cost less than the Gulf’s headline hotels. Our Rajasthan heritage tour covers Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur in one trip.
Is a 7-Star Stay Worth It?
It depends on what you want from the trip.
It is probably worth it if:
- It is a honeymoon, a big anniversary or a milestone birthday
- You value privacy and personal service more than sightseeing
- You plan to actually use the hotel (dining, spa, beach, suite) rather than just sleep there
It may not be worth it if:
- You will be out all day exploring and only return to sleep
- You are travelling with young children who won’t enjoy the formality
- Your budget would be better spent on a longer or more varied trip
A useful middle path is to book one or two nights at an iconic hotel and spend the rest of the trip in a comfortable five-star. You get the experience without paying top-tier prices for the full stay. Planning a honeymoon around a stay like this? Our Maldives honeymoon guide covers resort choices and budgets.
Mistakes Travellers Make When Booking
- Choosing by the “7-star” label. Since the term is informal, compare reviews, rooms and inclusions instead.
- Not checking what is included. Some rates include transfers and breakfast, others don’t.
- Booking only the hotel. Flights, visas and local transport should be planned together to avoid last-minute issues.
- Ignoring the season. The same suite can cost far more during peak weeks.
- Believing every image online. Concept renders and AI-made photos are common. Confirm a hotel actually exists before you pay a deposit.
- Skipping the dress code. Many top hotels expect smart dress in their restaurants and lounges.
Pre-Booking Checklist
- Confirm the hotel is operating and has current reviews
- Compare the same suite category across at least two booking sources
- Check what is included (transfers, breakfast, spa, activities)
- Read the cancellation and amendment policy
- Confirm visa rules for your nationality and travel dates
- Check flight timings, as Mumbai to Dubai is a short flight of about three hours
- Reserve special dining slots early
- Ask about special-occasion arrangements (honeymoon, anniversary)
How to Plan a Luxury Trip the Smart Way
Ultra-luxury trips work best when the details are handled in one place. That means matching the right hotel to your budget, aligning flights and visas, and arranging transfers and experiences so nothing clashes.
If you are looking at Dubai or Abu Dhabi, the time difference from India is only about 1 hour 30 minutes, which makes them easy for first-time international luxury travellers. You can browse all our international tour packages for more ideas.
